Letter to Water
2020
In this project, I am designing a water fountain that contains three mailboxes. Each mail mailbox will have a letter coming out addressed to the water, the letter will be in Arabic, English, and Braille language for blind people. The mailboxes will be in different highs, so it can accessible for children, adults, and people with wheelchairs. Also, there will be a button to press for listening to the letter in other languages. Writing this letters came from my practice as an artist, and I saw it is the best way I can show the visitors how important is the water to us, specially that sustainability is a very important element in expo2020.
Letters is a very personal practice for the human, also it is a practice that is very well know internationally. Letters was one of the firsts way of communication that I want to bring it back, and thought it can deliver the idea clearly in a simple way, and make a new experience for drinking water in the space.
The Letter to Water drinking fountain installation features three mailbox-shaped water fountains arranged in a circle, with each one facing outward. The fountains come in three primary colours and perch on steel poles of different heights. Their design is reminiscent of the distinctive Emirates Post mailboxes, with rounded tops and large horizontal slots.
Sabeel Fountains is an Expo 2020 initiative in collaboration with Art Jameel to reimagine the traditional Emirati drinking fountains. Beginning in September 2019 with the Sabeel 2020 open call, winning concepts can now be found across Expo 2020 Dubai.
